Editorial policy

Open Culture Journal aims to make cultural subjects clear without sanding off their complications. We separate checkable statements from interpretation, identify uncertainty and revise work when the record warrants it.

Accuracy and context

Writers should check factual statements against reliable material appropriate to the subject and give readers enough context to understand what a source can and cannot establish. Claims about a group, tradition or institution should be specific rather than presented as universal when they are not. We do not invent sources, quotations or experience.

Independence and outside work

Editorial decisions belong to the publication. A partner or contributor cannot purchase a favourable conclusion or dictate an independent article's findings. Paid or otherwise supported material is clearly labelled, and relevant relationships are disclosed so readers can distinguish it from editorial work.

Corrections

Readers can flag a possible error through the Contact page. We review specific, verifiable concerns and correct material when needed; significant changes should be made clear to readers. A correction is not a promise to adopt every suggested interpretation.

Illustrations

Some illustrations may be generated with artificial intelligence. Where that applies, the image is labelled as AI-generated; illustrative images are not presented as documentary evidence.
